Charging and discharging
During charging, both the positive and negative active materials are oxidized to produce electrons. These electrons form the current flow in an external circuit. The electrolyte can be used as a buffer to internal ion flow, such as in nickel-cadmium and lithium-ion cells. Or it could play an active role in the electrochemical reaction like in lead-acid cell.
Rechargeable batteries are charged using energy from an AC mains charger. However, some battery chargers can also be used with a 12-volt DC power outlet. To force current into the battery, the voltage of the source should be greater than the voltage of the battery. However, it shouldn't be too high or the battery could be damaged.
It takes between a few minutes and several hours for a charger to charge a battery. The slow chargers that are not capable of temperature or voltage sensing will only charge slowly and take 14 hours to fully charge a battery. Depending on the model, rapid chargers can charge cells in between two and five hours. The fastest charging times are usually less than fifteen minutes. Multiple ways must be used to detect when a cell has reached full charge. This could include temperature change, terminal voltage changes, and so on. To stop charging the device before it overheats or charges too much. Cooling fans are often included in the fastest chargers to prevent overheating. The charger may have a temperature sensor to protect the battery pack.
Different battery chemistries require different charging schemes. Some battery types can safely be charged with a constant voltage source. Others require a regulated current source to charge. The voltage of the battery should drop as it reaches full charge. Incorrectly charging a battery can cause damage. Batteries can catch fire, overheat, or explode when they are fully charged.
Rate of discharge
A "C" rate is a measure of the current flowing through a battery. This is often used to describe charging and discharging rates. C rate refers to the theoretical maximum time it would take to fully charge or discharge a battery. C/20, or a "20-hour rate", might be used for trickle charging. C/2 is the standard charging and discharging time (two hours to reach full capacity). The discharge rate determines the available capacity for electrochemical cells. The internal resistance of the cells (plates, electrolyte and interconnections) is a loss of energy. Also, the discharge rate is affected by how fast the chemicals can move around the cell. Peukert's law describes the relationship between discharge rate and time for lead-acid batteries. A lead-acid battery that cannot sustain a useful terminal voltage at high current can still be usable if it is discharged at a lower rate. Rechargeable cells' discharge capacities are often listed on data sheets. Cells for uninterruptible power supplies may have a 15-minute discharge rating.
The battery's terminal voltage is not constant when it is charged and discharged. Some types of batteries have a relatively constant voltage when they are discharged, but this is not true for all types. The voltage of non-rechargeable zinc-carbon and alkaline cells is 1.5V when they are brand new. However, this voltage decreases with time. The NiMH AAA and AA cells have a rating of 1.2 V. However, they have a flatter discharge curve that alkalines so can be used in equipment that uses alkaline batteries.
Technical notes for battery manufacturers often reference voltage per cell (VPC), which is the voltage of the individual cells within the battery. To charge a 12 V lead acid battery with 6 cells each of 2 V, at 2.3 VPC, you need a voltage of 13.8 V across its terminals.
Cell reversal can cause cell damage
A condition known as cell reverse is caused by exposing a discharged cell in the opposite direction to current. This causes it to discharge further. The most common circumstances for cell reversal are:
If a battery/cell is not connected correctly to a charging circuit.
Deep discharge is when a battery that is made up of multiple cells connected in series is achieved.
The problem arises because of the battery's different capacity cells. If one cell discharges faster than the rest, all remaining cells will push the current through the charged cell.
Many battery-operated devices include a low voltage cutoff to prevent deep discharges that could cause cell reversal. An inside circuitry for voltage monitoring is built into a smart battery.
A weakly charged cell can experience cell reversal even before it has been fully discharged. If the battery drain current is too high, internal resistance in the cell can cause a resistive voltage fall that is greater than the forward emf. The current flowing can cause the cell's polarity to reverse. To reduce the chance of cell reversal, the battery should have a higher required discharge rate.
Sometimes, like when replacing NiCd batteries that were overcharged, it is desirable to completely discharge the battery. It is important to access each cell individually in order to avoid cell reversal damage. Each cell is discharged individually by attaching a load clip to the terminals. This prevents cell reversal.
Storage in fully discharged condition can cause damage
A multi-cell battery that is fully charged will be damaged by the cell reversal effects mentioned above. You can either discharge each cell individually or allow each cell's internal leaking to dissipate its charge.
Even if the cell is fully discharged, it may sustain damage over time due to being left in that state. This is a good example of the damage that can occur in lead-acid battery cells if they are left unattended for too long. The optimal charge range is usually between 30% and 70%.
Depth of discharge
The depth of discharge (DOD), is usually expressed as a percentage the nominal ampere hour capacity. 0% DOD indicates no discharge. The usable battery system's capacity is dependent on its discharge rate and the voltage at the discharge end. It is important to know how the depth of discharge will be measured. The DOD for complete discharge may change due to manufacturing variations and aging. A rechargeable battery system can tolerate longer charge/discharge cycles, if the DOD on each cycle is lower. Lithium batteries can discharge up to 80-90% of their nominal capacity. Lead-acid batteries can be discharged to 50-60%. While flow batteries can discharge 100%.
Lifespan and stability of the cycle
Batteries that are repeatedly used, even without mistreatment, lose their capacity until they reach the end of the useful life. Different battery systems have different mechanisms for wearing down. In lead-acid batteries, for example, not all of the active material is returned to the plates after each charge/discharge cycle. Eventually, enough material is lost to reduce the battery's capacity. Some lithium-ion batteries can form reactive lithium metal on charging, particularly if there is a deep discharge. This makes it impossible for the battery to take part in the next discharge cycle. Overcharging or operating at high temperatures can cause sealed batteries to lose water from the liquid electrolyte. This can reduce the cycle life.
Time for charging
The user of rechargeable batteries powered products should be concerned about the charging time. The charging power supply may not provide enough power to charge the battery and operate the device, but the device must be connected to an external power source during charging. It may be possible to charge electric vehicles in the off-shifts for industrial use. Rapid charging is required for highway electric vehicles to be charged in a reasonable amount of time.
Rechargeable batteries cannot be charged at an unreasonable rate. A battery's internal resistance will generate heat and can be damaged or destroyed by excessive temperature rise. The speed at which the active material can be dissolved in a liquid electrolyte will limit the charging rate for some types. High charging rates can cause excess gas to build up in the battery or could lead to side effects that permanently reduce the battery's capacity. Fast charging is, with some exceptions and caveats. It restores a battery's full potential in less than an hour. Fast charging requires a battery charger system that has more complicated control circuits and charging strategies than a charger for slower recharging.
Active components
Secondary cells have active components that are composed of the chemical compounds that make up the active materials and the electrolyte. Both the positive and negative components are made of different materials. The positive has a reduction potential while the negative has an oxidation. These potentials are combined to create the standard cell voltage or potential.
The anode and cathode are the negative and positive electrodes in primary cells. This convention can sometimes be applied to rechargeable systems, especially lithium-ion cells. Rechargeable cells have a positive electrode that is the cathode of discharge and anode upon charge. The opposite is true for the negative electrode.
Types
Gaston Plante, a French physicist, invent the lead-acid battery in 1859. It is the oldest type. The cells are lightweight and have a low energy to weight ratio. However, they can provide high surge currents which means they have a large power-toweight ratio. This, combined with its low cost, makes the cells attractive for motor vehicle use to supply the high current needed by starter motors.
Waldemar Jungner, a Swedish inventor of the nickel-cadmium batteries (NiCd), invented it in 1899. It uses nickel oxide hydroxide as an electrode and metallic cadmium. The European Union banned Cadmium from most of its uses in 2004 because it is toxic. Nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH), batteries have almost entirely replaced nickel-cadmium batteries.
Waldemar Jungner also invented the nickel-iron battery (NiFe), which was commercialized in 1901 by Thomas Edison in the United States to power electric cars and railway signalling. It contains only non-toxic elements. This is in contrast to other types of batteries which contain lead, mercury, cadmium or lead.
In 1989, the nickel-metalhydride battery (NiMH), was made available. These batteries are both common industrial and consumer types. Instead of cadmium, the battery uses a hydrogen-absorbing alloy as its negative electrode.
The first lithium-ion battery, which was introduced to the market in 1991 is still the most popular choice for consumer electronics. It has the highest energy density and slows down the loss of charge when it's not being used. There are some drawbacks, including the possibility of accidental ignition due to heat generated by the lithium-ion battery. Experts say such incidents are rare, and can be avoided "through appropriate design, installation procedures, and layers of safeguards".
Lithium-ion Polymer Batteries (LiPo), which are lighter than Li-ion and offer slightly more energy density, at slightly higher costs, can be made in any form. Although they are readily available, they have not replaced Li-ion on the market. LiPo batteries are used to power remote-controlled boats, cars, and planes. There are many configurations of LiPo batteries available for sale on the market. They can be used to power certain R/C vehicles, helicopters and drones. Some tests have shown that the batteries can catch fire if they are not used according to the instructions. Independent reviewers of the technology have discussed the possibility of explosion and fire from Lithium-ion battery under certain conditions. They use liquid electrolytes.
Excellatron's thin-film lithium ion battery (TFB), is an improvement on the existing technology. According to the developers, recharge cycles have increased by around 40% to 40,000. They also claim higher charges and discharge rates of at least 5 . A sustained 60C discharge rate, 1000C peak discharge rate, and significant increases in specific energy and energy density were observed.
Some applications may require the use of lithium iron phosphate batteries.
UltraBattery is a hybrid lead-acid and ultracapacitor that was invented by Australia's national scientific organisation CSIRO. It has a tens of thousands partial state of charge cycles, and outperforms traditional lead-acid and lithium cells in comparison in testing in this mode of variability management power profiles. UltraBattery is available in Australia, Japan, and the U.S.A. in kW- and MW-scale installation. The technology has been extensively tested in hybrid electric vehicles, and it has been proven to last over 100,000 miles in commercial on-road testing using a courier vehicle. It is claimed that the technology has a life expectancy of 7-10 times that of traditional lead-acid batteries when used at high rates partial state-of charge. There are also safety and environmental benefits over lithium-ion. The manufacturer claims that the product has a nearly 100% recycling rate.
Due to the remarkable electrochemical stability of potassium extraction/insertion materials like Prussian blue, the potassium-ion battery can deliver around one million cycles.
The sodium-ion batteries are designed for stationary storage. They compete with lead-acid battery. The battery has a low cost per kWh of storage. It has a long, stable life span. The battery can withstand more than 5000 cycles and is not affected by deep discharge. The energy density of the battery is much lower than that of lead-acid.
Alternatives
Rechargeable batteries are just one type of many types of rechargeable energy storage devices. There are many alternatives to rechargeable batteries, and some of them are in development. Rechargeable batteries can be replaced with clockwork mechanisms that are wound up manually, driving dynamos. However, this system may be used to charge the battery and not to operate the radio. A dynamo can drive flashlights. Flywheel energy storage systems are used for transportation, laboratories and uninterruptible power supply. They store energy in a spinning wheel to convert it to electric power when required.
Ultracapacitors are capacitors with extremely high values. An electric screwdriver that charges in less than 90 seconds and can drive half the number of screws as one using a rechargeable battery was invented in 2007. Similar flashlights have also been made. As ultracapacitors are a way to extend the life and energy capacities of secondary batteries, betavoltaic battery may be used to provide a trickle charge to them. This arrangement is commonly called a "hybrid Betavoltaic power source".
Ultracapacitors are being made for transportation. They use a large capacitor to store electricity instead of rechargeable batteries used in hybrid cars. The downside to capacitors is their rapid drop in terminal voltage. A capacitor with 25% of its initial energy will only have one-half its initial voltage. Battery systems, on the other hand, tend to have a lower terminal voltage and do not drop rapidly until almost exhausted. This terminal voltage drop makes it difficult to design power electronics for ultracapacitors. There are some potential advantages to ultracapacitors in terms of cycle efficiency, life expectancy, and weight over rechargeable systems. China began using ultracapacitors in 2006 on two bus routes. One of these is route 11 in Shanghai.
Flow batteries are used for special applications and can be recharged by adding electrolyte liquid. A flow battery is a type rechargeable fuel cell.
